We are so thrilled to be able to bring you our very first geocoin, the Kiwi Nomad Geocoin "Black & White" edition was the first off the brain block and at just over 1.25" you'll find it a very versatile little coin. more images	Cross Staff & Back Staff Geocoin - antique bronze A very early navigational instrument, the cross staff was widely used among surveyors and astronomers. It was not until the 1500s after it was developed further that it started to be used at sea. The name is derived from its cross shape. It was cumbersome to use simply because a user had to focus on the horizon and star or sun at the same time; moving your eyes from one to the other and at the same time sliding the transversal (cross piece) until you achieved what you thought would be an accurate reading. It also required looking straight into the sun when taking daytime readings. It was with the invention of the back staff that these problems would be resolved. More Details John Davis invented a back staff in 1595 and his improved design became known as the Davis Quadrant. It rendered the cross staff obsolete since the user only had to take a sight at one object and didn't have to look at the sun to take a reading. Appropriately named, its basic design is like a cross staff, but with some enhancements. Daylight readings were taken by having your back towards the sun. In many cases, John Davis's invention ended up replacing not only the cross staff, but also the mariner's astrolabe and quadrant. It was in the late 1700s when the octant and sextant became the new preferred tools over the back staff. more images	Mariners Astrolabe Geocoin - Antique Silver The image of the navigator on the front of the Mariner's Astrolabe Geocoin™ shows how this tool was used when taking a reading from the sun. We also incorporated a raised metal edge around the coin. A real antique mariner's astrolabe would not have this raised edge, but we thought it was important to provide some protection to the spinning alidade. Instead of attaching a large metal ring for the handle, which were typical of old style astrolabes, we attached a rotating clip to make it easier for hooking the astrolabe to a stable item such as a post when taking a reading. The two holes on the spinning alidade are small enough to get a fairly precise reading from sunlight, but are large enough to see through when taking a reading of the North Star, Polaris. More Details In the 1400s, the mariner's astrolabe was developed as the replacement for planispheric astrolabes used at sea and saw continued use until the 1700s. It was a brass disk that was marked in degrees and had a spinning alidade. The distinctive large holes in the disk were to reduce its movement in light winds. It was designed to have a much simpler function and did not contain several moving disks which the planispheric astrolabe had that were difficult to utilize on a tossing ship. There is a glass bead tied to the end of the string that comes through the back of the coin. The 3-D image on the back is very detailed and depicts the quadrant's use. more images	GEOCAC Geocoin -Bronze The GEOCAC coin was designed by GEO*Trailblazer 1. He has undergone tireless work to get this project running by working and coordinating with the Missouri state surveyors. There was even a little bit of a race between Missouri and Kansas to see who will set the first disk but eventually Arizona was the first state to set a GEOCAC benchmark in November 2008 with Missouri setting their GEOCAC benchmark in December 2008. Other states will soon follow with some already starting their planning process. In addition, there are geocaching events projected to be held at each setting commemorating these momentous occasions. Each benchmark will have the official name GEOCAC. Once the actual benchmark disks are set, you will be able to do a search in the National Geodetic Survey database and retrieve their coordinates. Plans are being made to have some of these locations established as geocaches, and of course they will be added to Waymarking.com by the waymarking community. More Details The front of this coin is a representation of the actual benchmark disks. It shows the name of the benchmark and the Geocaching logo. The back shows surveyors from the early 1900s traversing the top of a mountain to set a benchmark disk. This coin is a large 2.25" in diameter and 4mm thick complete with a domed shaped front just like a real benchmark disk.
